Junk Journal - the little brother of Art Journal
Junk means waste. Thus, a junk journal could be a "waste diary". But it is not! It is a very cheap and easy way to create an Art Journal. So junk journals are really created from "trash", but the definition of trash can easily change from one person to another. The pages are papers you already have at home that might normally end up in the trash. The following materials could be used:
- Pages from books or magazines
- Old painted or drawn works that you no longer need or like
- Paper and cardboard scraps that would otherwise end up in the trash (e.g., expired tickets, old cutting patterns, plans and maps, paper grocery bags, torn envelopes, old bills, promotional materials, pizza boxes, etc.)
- Background papers (e.g., gelliplate or large-format papers that you cut up for your junk journal)
- Scrapbook, wrapping paper, or coloring pages (isn't really waste, but these pages already add color to your junk journal)
- Photocopies of old pages
- different papers (stone, marble,...)
So you see, there are no limits to your imagination. Now these pages can then be joined together with different binding methods (ideas, like for Art Journal DIY you can find here). This is how a junk journal is created. In the meantime, you can also buy junk journals on Etsy. The word "junk notebook" could be misinterpreted here. Wonderful and precious works of art can also be created when compiling the "trash" pages!
Decorate Junk Journal
So what now? You may be wondering if that's all there is to it. You've put those great pages together. But you probably want to decorate them further. So here are a few ideas of what you could do with them.
Classically, junk journals are great for art journaling. You already have a background, and you can take inspiration from that. Ideal. Most of the time you can create great pages.
These can also be embellished with other items. Here is a list of materials I like to use in my junk journals. Allowed is what you like! For example, this is what goes into my junk journal:
- Stickers that you find on lampposts
- Feathers
- Business cards from great places
- Sayings from magazines
- Beads and flowers
Junk Journal Use
Junk journals can also be used in other ways (not only as art journals):
- Capturing memories (travel, birth, wedding, etc.)
- Collecting recipes, poems, songs, cards, etc.
- Writing down little stories, poems or songs
